House of Sallust
The House of Sallust is one of the most important examples of dwelling of the Samnite age that is located in the ancient city of Pompeii. It dates back to the second century B.C. and owes its name to an electoral inscription on the facade.
The house is in good condition and you can visit the atrium with its impluvium made of tuff and the porch with its columns.
Near the atrium there is an area consisting of a kitchen, a dining room and two bedrooms surrounded by a peristyle. On the other side is the thermopolium.
In front of the house, six premises housed 4 shops, a bakery (with oven with fireplace and three millstones) and a tavern.
It is probable that after the earthquake of 62 A.D. the House of Sallust was transformed into a hotel.
Where is the House of Sallust?
In the western quarter of the excavations, on the right side of Via Consolare, before the junction that leads to Porta Ercolano. Nearby are the Terme, the House of the Faun and the House of the Vettii.
